"Total Meltdown", the PROPER episode 5 | ||
|
"Total Meltdown", the proper episode 5, has YT links via the Allspark TF Animated thread on said episode, and on Time Warner on Demand. Well, for those that were with Comcast before TW
bought it. I just checked my TW and I'm only getting "Roll Out" and "Home" in the current lineup. *shakes head*
Bulkhead using his wings (well, what else can I call them?) as a chair was COOL. I mean, it's not often we see that happening. Wrestler shrimp brings to mind Bane, and I'm somewhat seeing why CN didn't aired this. Black trying to "persuade" Fanzone into using his bio-tech rings warning bells. One, uncanny valley. Two, steroids in such usage? For law enforcement? *raises eyebrow* Also is that with Bulkhead and Prowl's joke exchange, that dynamic might not have made much sense unless it was after "Blast". Another is Megatron's involvement after "Home". Sure, Megs doesn't show up here but the pacing might've seemed a bit jerked if this was aired in proper order, instead of "Home" and then straight to "Blast". |

I do wonder, as well, if the steroid use has something to do with holding it off... Especially after everything that's happened recently with baseball
and professional wrestling. And if you go the WWE route with that thinking, there was the recent increase in investigations after wrestler Benoit killed his
family and then himself. Or it could just be they thought it would be better aired out of sync and that it would, in the long run, make more sense that way.
Dunno. I've only seen the first nine minutes of "Total Meltdown" so far... Have to get the rest of it to have a full opinion of it.

I actually really liked Total Meltdown. Thank You YTV~!
Prometheus Black looks to be a pretty cool villain, IMO. Sleazy, corrupt, brilliant scientist. His Acid powers are pretty much capable of beating all defenses except for energy fields, and I don't expect Ratchet to be lugging around a security desk everywhere he goes. Sari's key use during the wrestling match was cool, IMO. Like a boxing trainer. Her key wasn't overused here, but it coulda been used less. At least she isn't always doing good with it, y'know? |

Ooh. Total Meltdown is now viewable? That shall give me something else to do in my sick as a dog state. Meantime, Thrill of the Hunt....
S P O I L E R S Arcee/Ratchet, huh? Who would have seen that coming? Yay for flashback episodes! I am a complete sucker for them. And ones that also give me flashbacks to the cartoons I watched as a ten year old via the medium of Susan Blu's voice.... well, let's just say I'm going to have a soft spot for this episode. I suspect that on repeat viewings, Blast from the Past will prove to be better all round, but subjectively, I loved this one. Arcee continues the G1 tradition of being given virtually nothing to do in any one episode. Not so sure about the pink and black colour scheme (she looks like she's made out of liquorice allsorts). She has to be pink--it's kind of tradition by now, same as Bumblebee's yellow--so why not pink and grey? However hooray for no high heels! Or no high heel, anyway... And also yay for original voices. Judging by Lockdown's words, she also has no interesting weaponry. That's also true of G1, but one suspects that the Autobots might have finished the War a bit more quickly if they'd given their intelligence officers a reasonable chance of defending themselves.... Anyway, so basically, Arcee's the next best thing to her G1 counterpart. I predict that a toy will be designed for her and then cancelled before production. And then we have that popular sci-fi stereotype of bounty hunters: Lockdown. Who has Lance Henrikson's voice, so he's basically even cooler a character than Prowl. Ultra Magnus is a hardass. But, so far, that's it. Let's hope there's going to be more to him. Finally, yay for a glimpse of Blitzwing again! Although I suspect I might find the three-faces/three-personalities gag getting old if it has to be shoe-horned in every time he appears. Hopefully they'll tone that down once he's more firmly established. So somebody at least is trying to avenge Megatron instead of capitalising on his death. Interesting.... Other random notes: another heretofore unsuspected use of an electromagnetic pulse. But the ending confused me. Ratchet plainly turned it on Lockdown instead of Arcee, yet it was Arcee whose memories were wiped, while Lockdown seems to remember the encounter well enough to recognise Ratchet and his wounds. Did I miss something here or was it complete plot contrivance? On Arcee's potential to reappear: can she have a really bad memory from now on? Something amusing? Arcee never gets to be comic relief.... Lockdown knows how to hit Optimus Prime where it hurts. His axe! He is helpless without it!! Oh, wait.... he can do other stuff. No key! No humans at all, in fact. I'm very glad they've given the key a rest, and it's interesting to see that they can happily do a robots-only episode. Also an episode that's almost totally devoid of humour. Ratchet's plan to bring down the ship in a massively populated area was a wee bit risky. Thank heavens it managed to fall into that river and apparently cause no damage to the surrounding houses..... OK, I think that's it from me for now. Off to find Total Meltdown.... |

While I'm waiting to dl Total Meltdown, I'll comment on Thrill of the Hunt.
It doesn't happen often but this episode left me all teared up at the end. Ratchet's comment about having to remember for those who can't really got to me. Arcee was great and I hope we see more of her. I imagine her wiped memory could be restored up to a point but I won't make any bets on it. Lockdown was really mean and nasty. More obviously nasty than Megatron. To Ro: I think Lockdown had some memory loss since he says he can't remember faces and names but he never forgets a trophy. From that, I'd say he suffered peripherally from the EMP. I really liked it that Ratchet was able to take him out and I guessed that he'd be unaffected by the tool. And it was neat seeing him as a younger bot. I'll watch the ep again later but I thought it was very good. They haven't had a real stinker yet. |

Ohhh Lockdown was deliciously menacing and evil. I'm kinda of glad that the 'cons we've seen so far aren't totally kiddy and just complete
bumbling idiots, yanno? Sure, Starscream plays true to his typical G1 persona but Megs and Lockdown aren't stumbling over their feet trying to get Very
Nasty Stuff Done. And I like that. That aside, the Ratchet episode makes me squee. I love ya Prowler but I liked his story better. >_> I mean...we get
flashbacks, angst and a good explanation for him being the way he is.
And ZOMG!! His "(Dammit Jim!) I'm a medic not a Field Commander" line made me laugh my ass off and nearly choke on my cereal. I'm not a big Star Trek fan but even I've been guilty of having Ratchet pull one of those lines in fanfic and it makes me laugh to see the Ani people play a homage to that as well I'm with Rowentatm on the confusion about how Arcee lost her memory though. Only thing I can think of is that they didn't show Ratchet pointing it at her on-screen since they cut the scene short. *shrugs* Who knows, I'm sure they'll address if if/when they bring her back in. Hey at least she has an excuse for being a useless female character now? *dodges things* Okay, not a charitable thing to say but I will try and keep an open mind about this particular rendition of Arcee until I see what she can do when she's *not* strapped down to a table in need of rescue or promptly being mind-wiped. Sure, the self-sacrifice thing was suitably heroic but time is going to have to tell on her in my book. Also: Blitzwing....*snickers* I love how they keep following up the icy contemptuous persona with the total nucking futs one. He'll be good for a laugh but I think they're going to have to show some real Decepticon nastiness before I can take him for a serious character. |

Ratchet rocks. Well, when he took down Lockdown and going that his EMP generator was used a medical tool instead of a weapon. And this further separates him
from Kup. Wonderful writing in this episode.

I LOVED Lockdown! He's creepy, he doesn't care who he hurts, and downright nasty. I love that in a villian. Lance Henriksen was brilliant. They could
not have picked a better voice for Lockdown. Bounty hunters = win.
I really hope Arcee makes at least one other appearance. After I first heard she was gonna be in the show, I was kinda hoping that we would get to see her fight. But, not this time apparently. Although, I did like that she's no more curvy than the other characters, which is a good thing in my book. And I also like how they gave explanation to how Ratchet got the broken chevron and wound on his arm. It's nice when we actually get to see some backstory to characters. All in all, this has to be one of my favorite episodes so far, and I look forward to seeing more Lockdown |

MommimusPrime wrote: This is possible, except that from the way the animation went, he got the direct blast, and Arcee got the peripheral (it also looked like Ratchet was not expecting her memory to be wiped as completely as it was). It looks like Ratchet and Arcee escape before he regains consciousness, so he would not have had a chance to see Ratchet after the blast or make the connection between him and the EMP. And the implication is definitely that the memories will be lost forever, otherwise there would have been no point in using it on Arcee to erase the codes--it does beg the question, why couldn't Arcee just selectively delete those files rather than take the complete over-write route? This may be a fault of some over-editing at the end, but as it stands, the confusion at the end of the episode detracts from what is otherwise a very poignant moment. When I realised what the story of the flashbacks was, I thought Arcee was going to be killed off. She lived, but, well. Not a pleasant fate. That's me thinking about it in retrospect though. At the time, I was going: "Huh? He pointed it at Lockdown!"Also, I said there were no humans, but in fact, I lied. I'd forgotten about the humans in the chase scene, until the couple from the pedestrian crossing also appeared in Total Meltdown (viewing Sumdac's latest prototype with Captain Fanzone). I wonder if these two are going to be recurring characters, or just convenient animation models for extras? More on Total Meltdown later. Finally, I said Arcee looked like she was made of liquorice allsorts, which probably means nothing to anybody outside of Britain. So here's an example of their packaging complete with mascot. TF:A Arcee and Bertie Basset.... separated at birth? |

Yes, even on a second viewing it is confusing as to what happened. It looks like the EMP device was pointed directly at Lockdown and that Arcee suffered the
main brunt of the pulse. My reaction the second time was to say, "She's faking it," but I then thought, how awful for Ratchet if she was so I
dismissed that thought. But only on moral grounds. It makes a kind of sick sense that she fakes it to get away with the information. It could just be bad
animation and that it's really suppose to be pointing at Arcee.

Oooh, I really enjoyed Ratchet's backstory, and the fact that femmebots were used as agents in the war rang nicely with me, too. I wasn't expecting
the EMP-not-working-on-Ratchet twist, but it makes sense. Ratchet, learning to use the tool, would have to be immune to it in case of accidents. :-)
I still am not fond of the character designs, OR the "moving line background" transformation sequences, but the writing for this show is very well done, and the voice actors are tops!

Total Meltdown:
"-His attention span is short too." "-I HEARD THAT!" "-Apparently, so is his fuse." "-Whhhaaa The ninja-bot got in a good one!" *HIGHFIVE* ... I think I was laughing for like five minutes. XD God I'm loving TF: Animated. |

Shows there's a dynamic within the team instead of each one being a little packet to himself. I do have a random question on Blitzwing--the guy is obviously just a wee bit off his case, and yet he's the one talking to the bounty hunter. Does this mean that he's officially in command since Megatron's 'death' and Starscream's disappearance? Lugnut's obviously none too bright and BA didn't strike me as the leaderly type, so he seems to be the default. |

Blitzwing would probably be the leader by default. Screamer's out of the picture currently, so it would make sense for Blitz to take the reins. Even with
his split personality.
|

Quallevra |

Why not? One of those personalities could be a really great leader, after all.
"You said there's a price to pay for stopping those who'd do evil," Drake whispered raggedly. He looked back, and Stirke gasped softly at the empty, despairing expression in his eyes. "The price is too high."

We don't know a lot about Blitzwing just yet, including how much control he has over those personalities. Based on what we have seen, it appears that two
of them are fairly sane (one cool and collected, the other hot-tempered). It's only one that's completely nuts and that only appears to take over for
a few seconds at a time. If this is true, he could be a competent enough leader.
Alternatively, he might not be leading anybody; he just had the idea of hiring Lockdown. I rewatched the episode today, and I still can't figure out what was supposed to have happened at the end--Transformers wikia is describing it as the EMP overloading in the struggle between Lockdown and Ratchet, and it was indeed Arcee who suffered the brunt. I could buy that, but it's a pity it wasn't clearer in the animation. Mommimus, I can see where you're coming from in the 'she's faking it' theory. What I noticed the second time around was that Arcee sounds like an automaton in her last lines. If that's deliberate, are we to assume that she's acting? Or, as it struck me, that her processor was damaged beyond her memory? Ouch. Granted, she should have been a bit dazed anyway by that point, so I could be reading too much into it. I'm assuming she will reappear at some point, but I really really hope we find out what happened to her. Finally, because I don't think I've mentioned it before, Ratchet was just beautifully done in this episode. He's lovely. So far, this show has been very fair in adding depth to its characters (I think Bumblebee and Prime have had the most casual attention, surprisingly), and it looks like we're going to hit the mid-season point with a solidly established cast--let's hope the plot can follow suit! |
|||
Arison |
|||
I noticed that, too. While the losing memory bit did feel kinda phoney for me, kid's shows aren't best known for subtlety. It seems equally likely that's it's over-acting just as much as her faking memory loss. But anyway. Lockdown is totally awesome because of his hook. Animated really really needed a pirate to make up for Ninja Boy Prowl. 'Course, a hook doesn't automatically make him a pirate, but still. I needs me some giant alien robot pirates! What made me really love the episode was the explination of where Ratchet's broken chevron came from. The backstory was wonderful as it was, but that just really nailed it for me. It's little details like that that make a cartoon or TV show truly stand out from all the generic kid's shows, like Ratchet's slight change of voice to make him sound younger. Of course, I'm nitpicking, but hey. And, of course, more Blitzwing. "Oooh, I wanna see him turn into a firetruck! Can I? Can I, huh, huh, can I?!" Big point: The Decepticons know about Optimus Prime! And where the Autobots are, and that they've adapted new alt-modes! Somebody's done their homework. Guess a lot's gone on with the Decepticons other than just Starscream searching the Galaxy for the All Spark in a broken down ship. Oh man, I can't wait to see them.
The 90's are coming back! |
