I feel like I ought to clarify: I love this cartoon.

All of the characters do have distinct personalities that show through very well in their voices. They didn't have a huge amount of time to practice, and most of the actors do very well with the (sometimes a bit dodgy) lines they are given. The actors are obviously very talented people. Even so, there are moments when I literally had to pause the DVD and laugh for a moment after a particularly ridiculous line. But that's not a bad thing. It is, as Rowentam said, (actually, I pretty much agree with everything Rowentam said in that post) a part of the charm.

I'm not sure what it is that makes me giggle at the voice acting. It's not that their hamming it up too much. I'm used to hammy voice acting. I usually really like it. No, I think it's more the fact that not all of the voice acting is so over the top.

There was one line in particular, the first one that made me go "Eh?". It's in the first episode, about fifteen minutes in, when Ratchet, Cliffjumper and someone who's name escapes me go to rescue Hound, who got knocked off a cliff. Ratchet asks Hound if he can transform. He replies, "I...I don't think so." Now, in all honesty, the rest of that scene was well acted. But something about that line, particularly the way Hound says that first "I" just really throws me. It sounds flat, almost like he's just reading it. The dissonance between that line and the rest of the scene (though, arguably, Hound's previous line wasn't worlds better, though it was still pretty good) is what gets me, I think.

There seems to always be at least one scene that's like that. We'll be going along just fine, things are getting tense, and then somebody's line just goes off the wall. I think what happens then is that the flubbed line pulls me out of the action long enough to realize just how ridiculous the Decepticon scheme-of-the-week is, (don't take that the wrong way - the plot is pretty much what I expected, and I like it quite well) or how bad the animation was right there, or how over dramatic the rest of the voice acting is getting. In short, I notice the 80's. And, seeing as how I grew up on late 90's Discovery Channel specials and PBS documentaries instead of cartoons, it strikes me as hilarious.

I realize that I've only seen the first seven episodes, and that the acting (and scripting) probably get much better once things really get going. I'm not trying to offend anyone. When I started this topic, I was giddy from a lack of sleep (hadn't been to bed yet) and the fact that I'd finally gotten a chance to watch this cartoon. I never expected to like it as much as I do. I guess it didn't even occur to me that what I was saying could come off as offensive. Sorry if I came off as rude.



As a side note, Megatron has - hands down - the best evil laugh I have ever heard. Seriously. That is one villainous cackle.
